## Why the Winged Scapula Is the Hidden Consequence of Modern Training Walk into any commercial gym and look at the row of overhead press stations. Half the lifters pressing have a shoulder blade that sticks out the back of their shirt when they reach the top of the rep. Most of them do not know it. The ones who do have been told to "squeeze their shoulder blades together," which makes the winging briefly less visible without fixing anything. Scapular winging is what the medial border of the scapula looks like when it lifts away from the ribcage instead of staying flush against the thorax. It is most visible during a wall push-up, a forward reach, or any overhead load. It is a sign that the **serratus anterior** — the broad muscle that runs from the side of the ribcage to the medial border of the scapula — has stopped doing the part of its job that holds the scapula against the thorax. The thoracic spine, the lower trapezius, and the rotator cuff are all quietly trying to pick up the slack, and they are failing. Two modern habits compound it.
